Review of Nashville (59)

Intersecting stories of various people connected to the music business in Nashville, TN, that comes together over the course of a few hectic days in a dramatic climax.

Jason's Thoughts
I cannot believe that Nashville is nearly three hours long yet seems to accomplish absolutely nothing.  Now, I do like films that weave together unrelated stories with excessive amounts of dialog (see Pulp Fiction), but at least try to make it entertaining for the viewer.

To me, watching Nashville is like watching home videos of a neighbor's family that you don't quite know that well.  Sure it is entertaining and amusing to them, but you feel like an outsider prying in on their private lives.  Add to that all of the overlapping dialog that makes it so you can only pick out certain pieces of the conversations.  That has a true home video quality to it as well.

I can only guess that Nashville is one of those films that gets better and better with repeated viewings.  I, for one, will not be partaking in that, however, as I'd much rather spend my time watching the snow melt in my backyard than suffer through that again.  And to think that this is considered to be the crowning achievement of Robert Altman's career.

Some consider Nashville to be a masterpiece.  I consider it to be a piece of s**t.  To each his own, I guess.

Crystal's Thoughts
I regret writing in my last review that usually short movies aren't really good.  Well, this one was a long one and nothing but pure agony.  Jason keeps bothering me to write my review for this one, and I keep asking how can I write a review on a movie that I don't have any idea what it was about?  Really, I don't.  I tried to figure it out, but it just didn't happen. It was a waste of three hours, though I did get a few loads of laundry done.  If you need background annoyance, pop this DVD in.  It is the only purpose I can find it could possibly have.
