All because of Vanna White

The 100 Movies project of ours started because of Vanna White, the co-host of one of the longest running game shows on network television, Wheel of Fortune.

It was a Friday night, and neither Crystal or I had anything planned for the evening. As we went over some of the options that we could possibly do to entertain ourselves, Wheel of Fortune happened to be on and was showing a segment where Vanna White was talking about the historical significance of a particular location. I didn't quite understand what she was trying to say and I wondered out loud about her statement. Crystal responded to my query by telling me that I would know what she was trying to say if I ever sat down and watched Gone with the Wind for once.

That sounded like a challenge to me, as well as an idea on how we could pass the time on this particular Friday night. Plus, to make things even more convenient, we already owned the movie on DVD.

I will admit I only made it through about 3 hours of the movie before I started to doze off; however, it did spark my curiosity about other cinematic gems that I may have overlooked and have never seen before. I then stumbled upon the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Movies list.

With that list, Gone with the Wind took the fourth spot of the greatest American films of all time, with only The Godfather, Casablanca and Citizen Kane listed above it. Suddenly, I had a vision to watch all 100 of these films - in order - and asked my wife to watch them along with me. She agreed to do it and we were set to watch the greatest movies of all time, however, I soon found out that a new list was on the horizon.

The original 100 Years... 100 Movies list had been around for a while and had started to get a little outdated. AFI was in the works of releasing an updated 10th Anniversary edition of the list later in the year, to which we decided to wait until it was released before we set out to accomplish our task.

The 10th Anniversary 100 Years… 100 Movies list was finally revealed to the public on June 20th with a three hour special on CBS. A total of 23 new movies sprouted on the list, which ranges from the 1916 D.W. Griffith silent film, Intolerance, to the 2001 Peter Jackson epic, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings. Ironically, these two movies, representing the oldest and newest entries, are listed back-to-back at numbers 49 and 50.

As we watch all 100 of these movies, we will be updating our web site with our comments and thoughts about each movie. Come back often to see what we think about the movies and to watch us progress through the whole list.
