Review of Tootsie (69)

Plot
Michael Dorsey is a desperate, yet unemployable, actor due to his reputation. He transforms himself into a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands a role as a mature woman in a New York soap opera. His part captivates and inspires women everywhere but he soon finds himself falling for a female co-star.

Jason’s Thoughts
I know there are a lot of people who love this movie, but I am not one of them.  I'm not saying I hated it as I did enjoy the movie, but I just don't see why people hold this movie in such a high regard.  So high, as a matter of fact, that it managed to find its way onto this list of the greatest movies of all time.

The movie is likable, but to me it seems just like your average romantic comedy that happens to star Dustin Hoffman with plucked eyebrows.  I will give Hoffman credit, though, as he played the part just as good as anyone could have possibly done and it does seem like there are two different actors playing his roles.  Aside from that there were a couple of funny parts in Tootsie that made laugh out loud, but it wasn't enough for me to judge this as one of the best of all time.

Crystal’s Thoughts
What a refreshing movie to follow A Clockwork Orange!  I will admit, I probably gave Tootsie a higher scoring, because we watched it immediately after a film I could have done without.  I truly enjoyed Tootsie, the biggest reason being how controversial it must have been for a man to be playing a woman's part in the 80's, coming off the drug and sex infested decade of the 70s.

I also felt that Dustin Hoffman did an exceptional job in playing two roles.  I struggled memorizing a few lines of Shakespeare throughout the years, so I can imagine what a difficult feat it was to memorize two completely different characters of the opposite sex.  It was also interesting to watch Jessica Lange in action as I had never seen any of her earlier works.

The icing though for this movie is the terrific humor in it.  Sure, comedies and the like can make me laugh.  There were times though in this film that made me burst out laughing.  And don't let Jason fool you, he was laughing too, though I will admit, this is more of a chick flick.  I highly recommend it to all the ladies!
